The hottest days of the 2018 summer in Arkansas may still be ahead according to projections by the National Weather Service. Summer months are often characteristically humid and hot, which is no surprise to residents. However, the excessive heat can be damaging to personal health.

Arkansas fire departments will be better equipped to fight wildfires in the coming months as the state enters what is traditionally the summer wildfire season. The Arkansas Forestry Commission announced Wednesday it had received $200,000 from the U.S. Forest Service to purchase 67 wildfire suppression kits and give them to volunteer fire departments statewide.

The results of a new study show that this might not be the best time for a Trojan football team. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock released the football and marching band feasibility study Tuesday and will now begin analyzing the results.

The former campaign manager for Donald Trump’s presidential bid will be speaking at the annual convention of the Republican Party of Arkansas this weekend. Corey Lewandowski and conservative commentator Candace Owens are scheduled to be special guests at the gathering which is taking place in Benton.

State party spokesman Stephen Houserman said in an email that party members are eagerly anticipating both guests.

Arkansas Department of Transportation

The Arkansas Department of Transportation is holding a final public hearing Thursday on a proposed expansion of a 6.7 mile stretch of Interstate 30 through the downtowns of Little Rock and North Little Rock.

The meeting will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel at 2 Riverfront Place in North Little Rock. The department, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is seeking public input at the hearing.

Arkansas is changing the design and features on state driver’s licenses and identification cards. The Department of Finance and Administration announced Tuesday that the redesigned cards will be available at certain revenue offices starting next month.

The IDs feature imagery of diamonds and the state Capital’s golden doors. The changes are not just cosmetic. The cards also make use of new security features such as a ghost image to denote legitimate IDs.

U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis

Arkansas workers are seeing significantly lower-than-average growth in personal income, according to findings published this week by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, which examined growth over the first quarter of the 2018.

Arkansas saw a growth of 2.5 percent, the same as New York. Only Idaho had slower growth at 2 percent. The national average was 4.3 percent.

As work requirements are being implemented for Arkansas's Medicaid expansion program, training sessions are being launched to let recipients and trained assistants know how to meet the new guidelines. One session took place Tuesday at the Our House shelter in Little Rock where more than a dozen social workers sat in on the presentation.

Admitted in 1836 as the 25th state to enter the country, Arkansas has seen its fair share of historical events in its journey from territory to statehood. The state is commemorating its 182-year history with a birthday celebration Friday.

The Old Statehouse Museum in Little Rock recognized the birthday anniversary with a kickoff event last Saturday. The museum is partnering with several local businesses throughout the week who will be donating a portion of their proceeds to museum funds leading up to Friday.
