Rain Keeps Tales Of The Crypt Away From Historic Little Rock Cemetery

Students prepare for a previous presentation of Tales of the Crypt at Little Rock's historic Mount Holly Cemetery.

Rain is again impacting the annual Tales of the Crypt which is normally held at Little Rock’s historic Mount Holly Cemetery. The event features high school students portraying the many notable people who are buried there.

It was originally scheduled to be held last Tuesday, Oct. 9, but thunderstorms prompted organizers to postpone it until this Tuesday. With rain again in the forecast, the event will not be held at the cemetery, but instead in the auditorium at Parkview Arts & Science Magnet High School.

"It’s the 24th annual production of Tales and as long as I’ve been involved at the cemetery it has never been rained out," said Susan Borne with the Mount Holly Cemetery Association. "Last year I think we had almost 2,000 people come, so it’s a beloved event in the community and we just feel like it’s important to continue the tradition."

Students involved in the presentations research their subjects by reading obituaries and historical material at places like the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies.

Borne knows some people may be disappointed the event won’t be held at the cemetery this year, but felt it was necessary "to honor the stories of the people that they portrayed, and the high school kids worked so hard to do the research and learn their lines, and it needs to go on. The show must go on, as they say."

Money raised goes toward maintaining the cemetery which is alongside Broadway Street between 10th Street and 13th Streets in Little Rock.
