Jukeboxes

Do you remember the juke boxes so common a few decades ago and wondered how they got their name?

It seems that a jook house or jook joint was a “honky-tonk” roadhouse, often a brothel, certainly not appropriate in a so-called “good society.”

Eventually, in order to lower costs, coin-operated machines were installed.

Called “nickel-in-the-slot” machines  they quickly found their way into the general culture.
