Nature In The Natural State: Your Role In The Ecosystem

We’re depleting the earth at a faster rate than it can sustain itself. This means we’re headed for a disaster, unless we can slow our rate of consumption.

Have you ever taken a minute to think about how if at all you help to sustain the earth’s biosystems? Here are some suggestions.

  • If you have a yard, plant a tree. In Arkansas, a white oak supports over 400 species of caterpillars, which in turn serve as food for many birds and animals.
  • If you have a yard, don’t use poisons on your lawn, and have as little lawn as possible. Native grasses and flowering plants will support far more native species of insects.
  • Keep as much leaf litter as you can, because next spring’s caterpillars are pupating in it now.
