The American Cancer Society is enrolling participants in Central Arkansas for a decades long study this week. This is the third major undertaking since the 1960s.
Greg Broy, a spokesman for the American Cancer Society, said one focus is on changing lifestyles.
“We understand people are sitting more in their jobs, people are more obese in their lives, and their diets have changed. What about people’s lifestyles, their diet, what they’re doing, may cause cancer?” said Broy.
Broy also said studies in the 1960s and 1980s contributed significant information about cancer prevention.
“These studies confirmed the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. The cancer prevention studies helped demonstrate the link between larger waist sizes and increased death rate from cancer and other cases. What we’re wanting to do is find out now, over these years since our last study in the 80’s, what about people’s lifestyles have changed,” said Broy.
People between the age of 30 and 65 who have never had cancer can enroll at locations in Conway and Greenbrier. The rest of the study will be conducted through mail. The last day in Central Arkansas is August 10th.
