Torrential Rainfall Expected In Arkansas Wednesday And Thursday

The National Weather Service is predicting torrential rainfall across Arkansas on Wednesday and Thursday.

A slow moving cold front will move into the western part of the state Wednesday afternoon and rain will begin to develop. It will become widespread overnight.

Heavy rain will continue throughout the day Thursday and should taper off by late Thursday afternoon.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Tabitha Clark says the moisture that is currently in place will interact with the cold front and cause the potential for flash flooding.

She says flash flood watches will likely be issued and there is also a slight risk for severe weather.

“Anytime this time of year when we have the colder air interacting with the warmer air, we do see a chance of some severe weather and stronger storms,” Clark said. “I think the bigger story is probably going to be the rain, but we can’t rule out some isolated tornadoes or some stronger winds with these storms.”

Clark says the entire state could see one to three inches of rain, while western areas could see three to five inches.

The Ouachita area is especially favorable to see higher rainfall amounts. She says if people must travel during heavy periods of rain, it’s a good idea to drive during daylight hours and be especially careful while driving where water is running over the roadway.
