The University of Arkansas is banning the use of drones and remote-controlled model aircraft on or over the Fayetteville campus without prior approval.

The school announced the new policy Monday, saying in a statement that the move was made to "protect the safety, security and privacy of students, faculty, staff and campus visitors."

The school says that violating the policy could result in a criminal trespass warning and possible arrest. The university policy is asking anyone who sees a drone or model aircraft being operated on campus to report it to the university police.

Drones, the common term for unmanned aircraft systems, have become ubiquitous in recent years.
