Arts Scene: Collector Juan Rodriguez

Henry Ossawa Tanner

On Their Own Terms, an exhibit at the UA Little Rock Windgate Center of Art + Design, features black artists from the 1800s to the present day. And it’s the result of years of collaboration.

One collector making his pieces available for the exhibit is Juan Rodriguez, who worked his way up from cleaning art galleries to owning his own gallery in New York City.

With the help of fellow collector and close friend Bruce Llewellyn, Rodriguez has amassed a collection of art including works by Edward Mitchell Bannister, Robert Scott Duncanson, Charles Ethan Porter and Henry Ossawa Tanner.

Now, with the help of Garbo Hearne of Hearne Fine Art, Rodriguez is sharing his collection of African-American art with the world.

Arts Scene's Ann Nicholson spoke with Rodriguez before a reception for the exhibit, which ran from Jan. 17 to March 10, 2019 at the Windgate Center.
