Community Development Minute: The Built Environment

Did you know that the built environment can influence overall community health and individual behaviors such as physical activity and healthy eating? Well it can!

The CDC defines the built environment as the physical makeup of where we live, learn, work, and play.

How can a community’s built environment be instrumental in improving health outcomes? By increasing residents access to activities that promote health. For example, the University District partnered with UA Little Rock to provide fitness center access to residents. The establishments of community gardens and a farmers market provides access to healthy foods. These community resources are of equal importance when it comes to improving the health of a community.

You can find more info about the healthy initiative activities at uddclittlerock.org.
