A 51-year-old power plant in Arkansas was brought down in a series of implosions as Entergy Arkansas moves forward with more modern electricity-generating facilities.

The demolition was finished Thursday at the Robert E. Ritchie power plant in Helena-West Helena, a city in the Mississippi Delta region about 70 miles southwest of Memphis, Tennessee.

The plant's boiler and a 450-foot emissions stack were safely brought to the ground on Thursday.

The plant was built in the 1960s and utility spokesman David Lewis says the plant was officially retired in 2013.

Its three units were capable of producing 918 megawatts of electricity.

Entergy Arkansas provides electricity to about 700,000 customers in the state.
