School Desegregation Digitization 2

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 helped end school segregation in the Arkansas River Valley. With legislation looming, a number of school boards took the decision to desegregate. All had previously bused black students to Sullivan High School in Morrilton. Havana bused its two black students on a 120-mile daily round trip; Danville bused its four black students on a 108-mile daily round trip; Dardanelle bused its ten black students on a 70-mile daily round trip; Ola bused its six black students on a 70-mile daily round trip; and Atkins bused its twenty-five black students on a 28-mile daily round trip. You can find out more about school desegregation in Arkansas in a new digital exhibit hosted by the UA Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture.
