On Tuesday, February 6, 1883, the Little Rock Eclectic Society held a debate on women’s suffrage. This debate provides a snapshot of the attitudes of a variety of male Arkansans. It began with an essay presented by Major Charles B. Moore, a former Confederate soldier and current State Attorney General.
Moore was decidedly against suffrage arguing, among other things, that “Voting involves more than simply riding or walking to the polls and casting a ballot. It involves all of the turmoil and confusion and intriguing incident to a political campaign, and woman for her physical constitution, is unsuited for all this.”
