Slavery in Arkansas #3

Arkansas Tech University professor Kelly Houston Jones’s new book, A Weary Land: Slavery on the Ground in Arkansas, was recently published by the University of Georgia Press. The first major study of slavery in Arkansas in over sixty years, Jones places enslaved people at the very heart of the story. The book examines their multifaceted experiences, including how, where, and why they arrived; their daily work, routines, lives, and culture, on plantations and beyond; their struggles for survival, autonomy, and freedom; and their role in finally ending the practice of enslavement in the state.
