Do you feed birds in your yard or know of an area where birds regularly feed? If so, you can join Project Feederwatch, sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Birds Canada.
Feederwatch is a citizen science program that monitors feeding birds from November through April. More than 20,000 participants in the United States and Canada identify species seen at feeding sites and monitor their numbers.
Scientists take this data from citizen scientists and analyze it to produce information about winter birds, such as sizes and ranges of populations, that cannot be obtained by any other method. You can count for 5 minutes, or 5 hours, on whatever days you choose.
