Nature in the Natural State: Migrating Birds

Most North American bird species migrate to some extent, and most migrating birds migrate at night. They travel at speeds ranging from 15 to 55 miles per hour and fly from 15 to 600 or more miles each day.

Migration is much more dangerous than it used to be. Lights, cats, and window collisions kill billions of birds each year in our country. To help birds migrate, we should turn off outside lights at night and pull shades down to block indoor lighting, keep cats indoors and eliminate feral cats, and treat our windows.

Last October, over 350 million birds passed through Arkansas at night in October alone. You can visit birdcast.org to see whether tonight will be a high-count migration night for Arkansas and for your county.
