A memorial service for Calvin Ledbetter, a former Arkansas lawmaker and Professor Emeritus at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, is scheduled for Friday.
The service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Donaghey Student Center on U.A.L.R's campus.
Ledbetter died this past weekend. He was 84 years old.
In addition to being a politician and professor, Ledbetter was an author who wrote in great detail about Arkansas and its political past.
U.A.L.R Chancellor Dr. Joel Anderson calls him a low-key gentleman who was very insightful and had a great sense of humor.
“Cal Ledbetter was very much committed from very early into his life to serving the public, doing things that made the community better, that made the state better, and in a variety of ways moved Little Rock and Arkansas forward,” says Dr. Anderson.
Dr. Anderson says Ledbetter's classes in the Department of Political Science were very popular at the University, which Anderson attributes to Ledbetter's ability to present politics in an interesting and relatable manner.
Ledbetter was also a philanthropist who gave more than $1 million to U.A.L.R, funding a scholarship program for non-traditional students, establishing a monograph press, and providing a major donation to public radio in central Arkansas.
