The Arkansas Symphony To Exchange Tickets For Turkeys

Arkansas Symphony Orchestra

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Arkansas Foodbank are working together to fight hunger in Arkansas this holiday season.

The ASO is asking attendees of the “Beethoven & Blue Jeans” concerts Saturday and Sunday to bring a frozen turkey with them. The turkeys will be donated to the Arkansas Foodbank to help provide a healthy meal to the one in four Arkansans struggling with hunger.

Foodbank Spokesman Tyler Lindsey said the ASO first approached them with the idea last year and it was a huge success.

“They said 'why don’t we do a turkey drive where people bring out turkeys and we’ll offer whoever donates a frozen turkey or frozen bird two tickets to the Symphony Orchestra for any concert of their choice,” Lindsey said. “Last year we didn’t really know what to expect since it was the first time and we ended up actually getting three times the amount of turkeys we were anticipating.”

The donations will be accepted during the “Beer and Brats” street party in front of the Robinson Center Music Hall at 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The Foodbank’s refrigerated truck will be there to ensure the turkeys remain frozen. They will accept any other frozen poultry item or non-perishable food items.

There will also be representatives on site to accept monetary donations. Lindsey says that money would impact many lives.

“The holiday season is definitely a time when a lot of people in Arkansas need food the most. You think of holidays around this time of the year they’re all associated with sitting around the table and enjoying a meal with your family,” Lindsey said. “We take for granted sometimes knowing that there are some families out there that don’t have that luxury.”

The street party is open only to people with tickets to the “Beethoven & Blue Jeans” concert. There will be brats, $2 Diamond Bear Beer and sounds of the Episcopal College Steel Drum Band.

Tickets for the concert and street party are available online at www.ArkansasSymphony.org ,via phone at (501)666-1761, or at the door.
