Arkansas House Panel Oks Anti-Discrimination Expansion Ban

Local governments would no longer be able to enact their own anti-discrimination laws under a proposal endorsed by an Arkansas House committee.

The House Local Affairs Committee on Wednesday voted 12-6 in favor of a bill that would bar local governments from creating ordinances that prohibit discrimination on a basis not contained in state law. The move would block efforts to protect people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, neither of which are protected under state law.

Supporters of the bill say the move is needed to protect businesses by creating uniform regulations. Opponents say cities and counties should retain local control.

The bill was approved by the Senate in a 24-8 vote on Monday. It now heads to the full House for a vote.
