Man Charged In Arkansas Deputy's Death Held Without Bond

Fred Kauffeld
Pope County Sheriff's Office

An Arkansas judge has ordered a man charged with capital murder in the death of a Johnson County reserve deputy to be held without bond.

A Pope County judge on Monday held a probable cause hearing for 51-year-old Fred Kauffeld, who is charged in the Friday shooting of 42-year-old Sonny Smith. Kauffeld is being held at the Pope County jail.

Arkansas State Police say Smith was shot after confronting Kauffeld when Smith and other deputies responded to a burglary report. Police say Kauffeld sustained minor injuries after Smith returned fire.

Kauffeld's attorney John Burnett says it is common for facts to be initially misconstrued in high-profile cases. He says additional information will help illuminate the circumstance of the shooting.
