Republican U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton is proposing blocking federal funding to cities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration policies.
The freshman lawmaker from Arkansas on Wednesday proposed an amendment to an education funding bill that would make so-called "sanctuary cities" ineligible for federal immigration and law enforcement grants.
Cotton introduced the measure following the shooting death of a woman at a San Francisco pier. Police have charged Francisco Sanchez, a Mexican man who was in the U.S. illegally, in Kathryn Steinle's death. San Francisco is one of dozens of cities and counties across the country that do not fully cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Cotton said taxpayers shouldn't be expected to support such policies, which he called misguided.
