Highway Department Reopens Scenic Pig Trail After Repairs

Transportation officials say Arkansas Highway 23 - better known as the Pig Trail - has reopened to traffic after heavy rains forced its closure in May.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department says the highway north of Interstate 40 in Franklin County reopened on Thursday afternoon. The scenic highway is a popular alternative for drivers and motorcyclists traveling to northwest Arkansas from other parts of the state.

In May, heavy rains caused a slope supporting the roadbed to split, leading to large cracks in the highway, making it impassable. The route had been closed since.

In August, the Arkansas Highway Commission awarded a $1.8 million contract for workers to repair the 700 linear feet of the road affected by the slide.
