Childhood nutrition and economic recovery for the Delta Region will be key concerns of Arkansas lawmakers and advocates at a Washington, D.C. press conference Wednesday.

The Delta Caucus will join its national affiliate, the Economic Equality Coalition, to call for passage of the childhood nutrition re-authorization bill, along with legislation to open trade with Cuba. Republican Sen. John Boozman and Rep. Rick Crawford will be among the speakers.

Lee Powell, who represents the Delta Region as a co-chairman of the coalition, said renewed legislation to fight hunger is a top priority.

"Childhood hunger is really a national disgrace," said Powell.  According to the group, childhood hunger has increased 23 percent in the United States since 2007.

Sen. Boozman has said he would vote for a nutrition bill that was modified for greater local-level flexibility.
