The public transportation agency in central Arkansas has received federal aid to install 25 new solar-powered shelters.

Rock Region METRO announced Tuesday that it's received a $360,000 grant from the federal Transportation Alternatives Program. The agency says it will use the money to install 25 new shelters at bus stops with solar-powered lighting, a bench and a small bike rack.

The agency says it will kick in $90,000, making the entire project cost $450,000.

The 25 shelters will be ordered and installed next year in locations based on ridership.

Formerly known as Central Arkansas Transit Authority, Rock Region METRO serves 3 million passengers annually in Little Rock, North Little Rock, Maumelle, Jacksonville, Sherwood and other parts of Pulaski County.
