Former 2016 presidential candidate and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is to speak next month in Hot Springs. The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts announced Wednesday that she will deliver the commencement address to the 2019 graduating class on May 25.
In a press release, the school said that as Arkansas’s first lady in the 1980s, Clinton was an advocate for education reform which included the establishment of a residential high school focused on mathematics and sciences for gifted and talented students. Clinton hosted a feasibility meeting at the Governor's Mansion in April 1990 to discuss creating the school.
"As one of the earliest advocates for the creation of ASMSA, I cannot imagine a better individual to challenge and inspire our twenty-fifth class of graduates as they enter the next phase of their educational journey," said school Director Corey Alderdice.
The event will be held at the Hot Springs Convention Center at 2 p.m.
Meanwhile former President Bill Clinton is scheduled to be in Arkansas later this week. The Central Arkansas Library System says he will take part in a dedication ceremony Friday in which the Arkansas Studies Institute will be renamed the Bobby L. Roberts Library of Arkansas History & Art. The ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Ron Robinson Theater in Little Rock.
On Saturday, Mr. Clinton is to be the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the Hope-Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce. He was born in the southwest Arkansas town.
