Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar is returning to Arkansas this weekend. The Minnesota senator is scheduled to speak at a rally Sunday beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Maumelle Event Center.

It comes just over a week before Arkansas will be among 14 states taking part in primary elections that could give a solid boost to a candidate in the Democratic race.

"Arkansas is on the radar screens of the candidates as Super Tuesday approaches," said Hal Bass, a political science professor at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. "It’s a place where candidates feel like they can come in and make a difference, and that’s what you need when you’ve got several contests going the same day. You want some place where you can stand out without undue expense, which is a concern for everyone except [former New York City Mayor Michael] Bloomberg."

Bloomberg has visited the state twice since announcing his candidacy and had a busload of surrogates travelling Arkansas Friday with stops scheduled in Little Rock, Pine Bluff, Jonesboro and Fayetteville.

Chasten Buttigieg, the husband of former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg, is scheduled to take part in a private event with supporters next Wednesday in Little Rock. Over the weekend, Buttigieg's campaign has 12 "canvass kickoffs" throughout the state, including one Saturday at 1 p.m. in Little Rock.

The campaigns of other candidates are planning rallies and working to energize supporters through get out the vote events. A source says at least one presidential candidate will be making a visit to Arkansas later next week.
