The Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) is gearing up for two months of programming focused on Tim O’Brien’s Vietnam War classic “The Things They Carried.”

Today marked the launch of the library’s National Endowment of the Arts’ Big Read program which will include events like book clubs, panel discussions and a movie series.

Mark Christ, head of adult programming at CALS, said the Big Read is meant to engage the community.

“The core of what the Big Read is about is getting people out there reading this book and talking about it and being inspired by it,” Christ said.

He said the themes in O’Brien’s book are appropriate and relatable for current readers.

“Seniors in high school today have never known a time that America is not at war,” Christ said. “And ‘The Things They Carried,’ with its broad themes and insights, seemed to be especially appropriate for this period in American history.”

The Big Read will include over 30 events at libraries across the system from March 5 through April 28.
