Issues That Matter: The Great Phone Debate

LA Johnson

NPR

Perhaps more than any other sector, the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects are still being felt in the education system. Now, policymakers have set their sights on restricting social media and phones as a way of boosting outcomes and improving mental health in young people.

Join us as we delve into those topics on Issues That Matter, the Great Phone Debate.

Our guests are Dr. Julie Williams, Deputy Superintendent of Fayetteville Public Schools; Stefanie Vestal, Director of Strategy and External Affairs at the Little Rock School District; and Dr. Ravi Iyer, managing director of the University of Southern California Marshall School’s Neely Center for Ethical Leadership and Decision Making.

Our discussion was recorded live on Zoom on May 29, 2025, and is the latest in our series of panels presented by the Central Arkansas Library System, the League of Women Voters of Pulaski County and Little Rock Public Radio.

You can listen to an edited version of the discussion above.

Daniel Breen is News Director of Little Rock Public Radio.
