Arts Scene: Trombonist Michael Underwood

Arkansas Symphony Orchestra

Michael Underwood is in his 14th season as Principal Trombone of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and his 11th year teaching music at UA Little Rock. He's also an experienced arranger, and the director of the UA Little Rock Jazz Ensemble.

Underwood was featured in Songs from he Heart, the first Intimate Neighborhood Concert of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s 2018-2019 season, where he was the soloist in Viennese composer Johann Georg Albrechtsberger’s Trombone Concerto in B-flat Major.

Underwood spoke with Arts Scene’s Ann Nicholson about his position being in a supportive role in the orchestra, and his more than 40 years of experience with his instrument.
