Arts Scene: Tubaist Ed Owen

Ed Owen has been Principal Tuba of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra since 2000, and teaches the instrument at Arkansas State University in his hometown of Jonesboro.

Very much aware of the world he lives, Owen delights audiences with every note carefully thought out. The son of Missionary Baptists, church music was and is a major part of his musical experience.

Owen spoke with Arts Scene's Ann Nicholson on the importance of the Arkansas wilderness, the tricky dynamics of tuba playing, and how to achieve the true meaning behind each note you play.

Owen was featured in the third Intimate Neighborhood Concert for the ASO's 2017-2018 season on May 3 at St. James United Methodist Church in Little Rock, where he played Dutch composer Jan Koetsier's Concertino for Tuba and String Orchestra, Op. 77.

Daniel Breen is News Director of Little Rock Public Radio.
