If you Google birth defects, this is what you will see first: “Every 4 ½ minutes, a baby is born with a birth defect in the United States. That means nearly 120,000 babies are affected by birth defects each year. Birth defects are structural changes present at birth that can affect almost any part or parts of the body.” In that same 4 ½ minutes 33 babies are born. (3,978,497 annual birth rate) So 3% are born with defects and 97% are normal births. Maybe that is why most of us develop a blind eye to the impact of the birth defects those 120,000 children must face over their lifetime. Hopefully, this generational discussion will raise awareness of, and empathy for those children, and now adults, who live with a birth defect.
