KKK in 1920s Arkansas

University of Central Arkansas professor Kenneth C. Barnes’s new book, The Ku Klux Klan in 1920s Arkansas: How Protestant White Nationalism Came to Rule a State, was recently published by the University of Arkansas Press. With its stronghold in Little Rock, the Klan had more than 150 state chapters and tens of thousands of members in Arkansas in the 1920s. The membership included community leaders, politicians, prosperous farmers, businessmen and professionals. At the head of the organization was Grand Dragon James Comer, with his wife Robbie Gill Comer serving as the Imperial Commander of the Women of the KKK.
