For Little Rock Public Radio, this is Dan Boice, with Naming Arkansas and Double Names
Not many cities are named for two people. Probably the largest such city in Arkansas is Paragould, named for James Paramore and Jay Gould, but for many years there was another thriving town named for two men. One of the earliest settlements on the White River, the Arkansas County town of Casscoe was named by Captain Creed Halley in the 1840s for two of his fellow officers from the Mexican War, a Lieutenant Cass and a Lieutenant Coe. The town’s name was later changed to Wellborn by a prominent citizen, and then to Bermuda, allegedly because there was so much Bermuda grass, but in 1894 the name returned to Casscoe. With time, the stature of the two soldiers has grown, and a later story tells that General Cass and Colonel Coe were two of Andrew Jackson’s commanders at the Battle of New Orleans. The lieutenants would be amused at their promotions, and the town of Casscoe remembers their service in the U.S. Army.
