For Little Rock Public Radio, this is Dan Boice, with Naming Arkansas.
The Baxter County town of Old Joe has several stories behind its name, not all of which are perhaps suitable for family listening.
Old Joe is named for the mountain known locally by the unique name of Old Naked Joe. Stories say the mountain got this name either because a tornado tore all the trees off the mountain called Old Joe, which thereupon became Old Naked Joe, or because of a somewhat disturbed individual who used to run around in his altogether. One tale says that the poor man was hanged, which seems like a steep price to pay but a lesson to listeners to keep tabs on their clothes. The other story is of an Indian named Old Joe, a more pedestrian but more likely story. In any case, the town, which had beencalled Hopewell and North Fork, in 1936 asked for its post office to be named Old Naked Joe. The postal service reasonably insisted that the town drop “Naked” from its name. And so it did.
For the University of Arkansas at Monticello this is a fully clothed Dan Boice.
