Deepa Shivaram
Deepa Shivaram has been covering the White House for NPR since 2022.
She's extensively covered AI policy in the Biden and Trump administrations, economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and the marathon that was the 2024 election. Her stories aim to contextualize the churn of White House politics and policy and how it impacts communities outside Washington.
Shivaram joined NPR in 2021 as a digital news reporter covering breaking news in the U.S. and around the world. Her stories are wide ranging, from live coverage of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, to analysis of Asian American representation in television.
She got her start in journalism freelancing for the BBC in Washington and producing at NBC News, where she worked for the longest-running show on television, Meet the Press. In 2019, she was selected as a campaign embed for the network, closely following then Senator Kamala Harris, Senator Elizabeth Warren and other 2020 presidential contenders.
Shivaram is a graduate of George Washington University, where she studied journalism and political science. She is an alum of several global journalism fellowship programs, including FASPE (Fellowship at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics), RIAS and the U.S.-Korea Journalism Exchange through the East West Center. Shivaram is also a proud member of the Asian American Journalism Association.
